IDEAS FOR ST GEORGE’S DAY
Prayers;
Lord helps us to rejoice in the glorious victory of ST George and give us courage to follow the example of our Patron Saint. Amen
Help s to be as brave and fearless as St George and to always work for what is right. Help us to be kind and helpful to all. Amen.
Games and Activates:
1 Put paper and crayons of felt tips on the table for each group of players. The first person runs up and starts to draw a picture relating to the legend of St George, at a given signal they stop and the next person runs up and continues the drawing. Continue in this way until the pictures are complete or until the time given is up. Then find an independent judge and possibly give a small prize to the winning group.
2 With coloured papers (or white paper and crayons or felt tip pens) and a cocktail stick everyone to make a St George’s Flag.
3 With pre-cut materials and glue, make puppets of St George and other characters in the legend. Put on a puppet show.
4 Supply lots of newspapers and ask the youngsters to look for reports of acts of bravery or kindness, cut them out and paste them on card. Follow this up with a discussion about some of the acts they have chosen to cut out.
5 As No 4 above, but give each group identical sets of newspapers; then discuss why they have chosen the same or maybe different reports.
6 Each group to have two or more newspapers. Get them to look through the papers for a reports which shows the same characteristics as St George, they hen illustrate the report in some way – drawing what happened as a cartoon type strip, a placard or poster, or preparing it and presenting it as a TV news item.
7 Give each group part of the story of St George to act and a set time in which to prepare (10-15 minutes is usually about right), then piece the whole thing together in the right sequence.
8 (This is a slightly complicated game, probably best played with no more then 10 players until they get the hang of it)
Players sit in a circle, name them round George, Andrew, Patrick, David and the rest ore numbered 1 to the last player. The idea is to move up to being George.
George starts the game by saying (for example) “George to number 4” the player who is number 4 must quickly pick up the challenge and say (for example) “No 4 to Andrew”, Andrew then quickly says (for example)”Andrew to number 1” and so on. Any one, who makes a mistake, hesitates or dose not respond quickly, moves to being the last person and all move new names and/or numbers.
9 Make out cards or certificates with words –
WELCOME
To this meeting of
THE KNIGHTS OF ST GEORGE
On this day……..20……
I have learned…………..
Signed……………
Talk with the youngsters about some of the knightly virtues – steadfastness, bravery; hoes try, caring for those less fortunate, etc, etc. Ask them to complete their certificate with the virtue they would like to bring their lives. A leader knows their own members and may find it better to alter the words to “I have decided to try to be ……….” Or “I will try to be ………..” or other similar ideals.
After 2 or 3 weeks remind them of their certificate and ask, in general terms rather than each person, how they are getting on with their attempts.
10 Have a jousting tourney – string inflated balloons from a cross beam or frame half way down the room so that they are above the heads of the players. Using a pointed stick, each player charges down the room, not pausing, and tries to explode a balloon.
11 Make some typically English food – there are lots of recipes for easily made goodies – Eccles Cakes, Cornish pasties, Yorkshire Parkin, Fudge, etc etc. If you start with ready made pastry quite a lot if items can be made during the average meeting: others which need longer preparation and/or cooking time can be made at residential events.
SONG I am H.A.P.P.Y. I am H.A.P.P.Y.
I know I am, I’m sure I am,
I am H.A.P.P.Y.
FINISH WITH A Beaver Yell
FINAL PRAYER We thank you Lord for all the food we have to eat. Help us to think of children, some in far off places, who do not have enough to eat. Help us to remember to share our things with our friends.
AMEN
